You probably know that consistency is key to making progress, doing better work, getting in shape, and achieving success in most areas of life.

There’s a principle called the 100-hour rule. It says if you do something for 100 hours over a year (just 18 minutes a day), you’ll be better at that thing than 95% of the world.

Hard to believe, right? But it’s true.

Once you realize the power of consistency, there's a danger: falling into an all-or-nothing mindset. It’s easy to obsess over being perfectly consistent.

For example…

  • Trying to lose weight? You might think if you don’t follow your diet perfectly, you’ve failed.

  • Want to meditate daily? You might stress over never missing a day.

  • Looking to be a successful writer? You might think successful authors write every single day without fail. (The same goes for artists and athletes.)

It's easy to confuse being consistent with being perfect.

And that’s a problem because life happens. Mistakes, emergencies, and errors are part of being human.

Instead, focus on your average speed, not your maximum speed.

Think of daily failures like red lights when you’re driving. You’ll stop at a red light now and then, but if you maintain a good average speed, you’ll still reach your destination, despite the stops and delays.

Consistency is crucial for success in any area. Mastery requires a lot of work.
